Sunrise Rock
Highlands  ·  North Carolina

You won't run out
of things to do.
You'll run out of time.

Main Street in Highlands, North Carolina, four miles from the house

A town small enough
to actually know

Main Street is short enough to walk end to end, interesting enough to take two hours doing it.
Good restaurants. Independent shops. A bookstore. An art gallery or two. Wine shoppes.
The kind of town that reminds you what towns used to feel like.

No chain restaurant you'd recognize.
That's not an accident.

Wine tasting in Highlands, North Carolina

A serious
wine town

And wine. Highlands has quietly become a serious wine town — tasting rooms and wine bars tucked into the same blocks as the bookshops and galleries. Worth an evening.

Golf course on the Highlands plateau

One of the South's
great golf destinations

Highlands is also one of the South's great golf destinations. Several courses within a short drive, all at elevation, all with views worth pausing for.

Highlands Outpost, minutes from Lotts of Sky

Mountain coaster,
snow tubing, trout fishing

Highlands Outpost sits just down the road in Scaly Mountain with a mountain coaster, snow tubing, ice skating, and guided trout fishing — the kind of place that keeps the whole group happy regardless of age or energy level.

The village of Cashiers, North Carolina at Christmas

Fifteen minutes south,
a different kind of town

Cashiers sits a little quieter than Highlands — a village green, good restaurants, and shops worth lingering in.
No chains. No strip malls. Just the kind of place that feels like it was put here on purpose.
At Christmas, the whole village lights up. It's worth the drive just to walk around.

Glen Falls near Highlands, North Carolina, with a rainbow in the spray

Three more waterfalls
within ten minutes

Bridal Veil Falls is less than fifteen minutes from Lotts of Sky — and you can drive behind it.
Dry Falls is twenty minutes, with a short walk to stand under the cascade.
Glen Falls is a longer hike with multiple drops and views that earn the effort.

The Cullasaja Gorge pulls all of it together — a stretch of highway where waterfalls appear around every other bend.
Most people drive it once and turn around to drive it again.

Whiteside Mountain, a five-minute drive from the house

The Nantahala is
right outside the door

The Nantahala National Forest surrounds the property.
Hiking trails range from easy loops to serious backcountry.
Whiteside Mountain is a short drive with views that stop conversation.
Trout streams, kayaking, mountain biking — more than any one trip can cover.

Or nothing at all.
The porch, the waterfall, and a cup of coffee counts as a full morning here.

Pinky Falls, a nearby waterfall with sliding rocks and a small beach

Pinky Falls —
sliding rock and beach

Most visitors to Highlands never find Pinky Falls.
There's no sign, it isn't on the tourist maps, and most people drive right past it without knowing it's there.
Which is exactly what makes it worth finding.

The walk in is roughly a tenth of a mile from the road with almost no elevation change.
A wide, shallow cascade drops over a series of rock steps into a cool pool.
There's a small sandy beach. Bring water shoes — the rocks are slick.

Highlands & Cashiers

Dinner reservations worth making. Shops worth browsing. Four miles to Highlands Main Street, 15 minutes to Cashiers. Small enough to feel personal.

At the house
You may not leave

Zip line, hot tub, game room, covered decks. Some guests plan full days out. Some never leave. Both are right.

The hardest part is
choosing what to skip.
